CLIMBING

On most of the Highlands, granites are omnipresent and very rich in Calcite, with large crystals and exceptionnal friction qualities.
Sandstones of the South are unfortunately too soft for serious climbing but the limestones up North are possibly the best worldwide.

There are hundreds of unclimbed cliffs and peaks and amateurs of first ascents will have a very large choice

up to now, there are three major climbing areas :

1) L'Imerina : Tana and surroundings.

4 sites partially equiped with a little more than 50 routes in the 6's, all of it on perfect granite.
A couple of routes go for 2 pitches otherwise it is mostly in the 20-30m range at a maximum of 7a.
Potential is important in the area with 300m walls and many outcrops. Unfortunately, visitors go directly to the major sites and doesn't motivate us much to extend the present possibilities.

2) Fianarantsoa area.

The Tsaranoro area is now world famous but the surroundings are loaded with huge granites inselbergs, some up to 400m high! Almost all of them are still totally unclimbed. please feel free to wander around, ...

CAMP CATTA host teams from all over the planet who enjoy the climbs and the malagasy way of life. The only limit we had to set concerns gear. All the fixed gear has to be rustproof, as eastern trade winds fly in loaded with salt and already damaged the earliest equipments (i.e, the rusty stuff of Gondwanaland).

3) Diego area.

The Montagne des Francais is only a few miles away from downtown Diego and is easily reached by taxi. The other major spot is much harder to reach but definitely worth the extra effort!...

NEWSEA ROC, our structure located on this archepelago laying in the Mozambique channel will tell you more about the spot; A Must of any pleasure dedicated climber.

Climbing history started with les Lezards de Tana who started climbing and bolting around Tana and the first multi pitch (8 of them) in 93 on a famous dome on the road to Tulear, les Pieds nique les!.

That's also in 93 we discovered the potential of Nosy Hara archepelago

Started in 93 in Diego, the climbing scene is now relatively active with NewSea Roc, our structure dedicated to the islands of Nosy Hara and also Aquaroc who does a lot of climbing on Montagne des Francais and even equiped a large initiation sector on the cliffs.

Central highlands are for compact granites offering unusually steep friction climbing for this kind of rock.
