| CRUISING
With tourism development, more and more boats become available
giving access to teh most remote spots of the west coast,
the only one fitted for sailers and sea lovers.
A bit dreamy, aint it, ....
Local standards of transportation will offer you great adventures.
Dhows, ketchs and dug outs have sailed those waters for
centuries and are a great way to discover virtually cut off parts
of this coast. If you ain't rushed, you should enjoy it.
 Play with
the winds, move with the stars, ...
I cherish three areas :
1) North West from Majunga to Diego.
Good trade windss, superbly isolated bays, a local
Sakalava population warm hearted. Basically the only reasonnable
access to the civilisation would be in Nosy Be - Ambanja,
the rest of this coast being somehow forgotten, ...Great
fishing and Hunting grounds, a close similarity with paradise.
2) South West from Tulear to Morombe. Some parts nest
a great lagoon of over 70 miles long. Blues are deeper
than anywher in Mada and the coast is very lightly
populated. The most regular winds impose trajects going
north
and from
Ifaty you havbe a few boats and dug outs available.
The part I like most start from tsifota, all the
way up to Andavadoaka. More and more local hotels
open on the coast and some more ambitious projects
are being
launched by foreign investors. That's Camp Vezo
territory and highly recommandable for adventurous
minds.
3) North East, is another fantastic coastal cruising area.
Don't expect to sail on this side, all the logistics are
engine powered! lagoons are exceptionnal and that give
you access to real wonders like Mananara islets, nosy Mangabe
and the Biosphere reserve of masoala. Some rivers can be
explored for dozens of miles in a truly bush style.
Major drawback is the weather with a rainy climate
most of the year (mostly at night). From July to Sept you're
quite sure to cruise around whales (megaptera). |

And even a bit of luxury, if you wish so,
