PLANT A FOREST WITH US!
A bit pretentious, should have said plant a
few trees with us in the Tsaranoro valley and Around Nosy
Hara, up North, but I've always had wild dreams.
However, I'd have trouble to plant more than
my piece of mountain and stretch of beach by myself. It's
mainly a matter of resources as
I already spend a lot of time, energy and currencies on
it.
After my disappointing Camp Catta experience, I decided
to
invest my humanitarian efforts into reforestation while
Camp Catta will continue to aim its actions to the human
factor
(education and health).
The third operator present around
(Tsara Camp of Boogie Pilgrim) has unfortunately very
light involvement (if any) in the development schemes we
try
to encourage.
In 2005 I even planted in Lovasoa, the
Tsara Camp
district!...
Prune tree after 6 months in ground.
When launching Tsarasoa on Dec 2003, I attacked bluntly the villagers and managed to plant 500 eucalyptus trees and over 100 fruit trees.
Despite the immense land problems caused by tree planting, that
first batch has been rather welcomed by locals. Stimulated by this moderate
success, I managed during the 2004-2005 planting season (Oct to Jan) to extend
my actions and even plant along the valley tracks(1500 eucalyptus and acacias,
150 fruit trees).
Villagers showed up and begged for young trees and seedlings,
some came to help us out and even the Soavahiny baker received and planted
200 trees.

It could mean nothing, but out here it's a sort of cultural revolution. As planting a tree has always been deep of consequences et granted only by the local king or ruler, this action seems to democratize.
For the first time individuals asked me for seedlings which is
totally unusual. I have to say that in the same period, I really worked hard
on my piece of land. Over 5000 forest trees, 600 fruit trees, feeding grass,
veges, ....
For a shitty piece of land, plagued with lavaka and intense erosion
on barren ground, I'm landscaping a garden and locals seems to realize that
one can heal all the barren hills around. They watch it growing, check the
young plants and seem to limit the bush fires.
I thank them so much for that.

There is much left to do and wild intentionnal fires keep storming the mountains around but seemingly at a more tempered pace than the previous years.
The new government seems to put the pressure on the population
and encourage the reforestation of large desert zones. Some hopeful actions
who deserve efforts from all of Madagascar lovers.
The challenge is immense,
and I need your help to plant those Wide Wild Woods
The FOBE N.G.O which has decided to establish in the valley is associated
to this idea, it's taking over the reforestation operations.
Check out their
pages,
help us out.
Daily life, the wood chore, a serious treat to what's left of the forest.
In Diego, we choosed to work around the village of Ampasindava,
the launching beach for our islands ventures. We only start the tree scheme
out there but after this season and the official line, next year should see
much more intensive planting. Check out Mathieu's pages on
